Welcome to the first Slow Jams show. These shows aim to showcase some of the down tempo tracks resident in my record crates. The first track in this series of
|
| shows is one of my all time favourites. “After You’ve Gone” by the late Nina Simone was recorded in 1974. This song was written in 1918 and has been revisited by Bessie Smith, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong among others. The mashup of Anne Peebles, Missy Elliot and Dennis Brown’s “Song My Mother Used to Sing” is a white label 12″ from 2004. I recently discovered the D.Brown original at a Brixton sound clash held on the anniversary of his death. The vocal is taken from the Missy’s 90’s hip hop treatment of the Peebles 1974 classic. Enjoy. |
