| Welcome to the eighth roots and culture reggae show for the Downlow radio. The first rhythm worth a mention is the “Hold On” rhythm conceived in 1988 for Dennis Brown’s ”Hold On To What You |
| Got” cut. Layed down by the world’s tightest drum and bass duo, Sly & Robbie for their label Taxi Records. Cut one is Junior Kelly’s “Hold The Faith”. This veritable mashup samples the original punch line, revisits the rhythm yet embellishes with remarkable skill. Killer records from Kelly are few and far between these days. His hey day in the mid to late ninties are over. The second “Hold On” cut comes from London’s very own Peckings Label featuring Bitty McClean. “The Real Thing” is an exceptional production and bares all the hallmarks of the Peckings analogue approach to the sound of lovers rock London. The tune everyone always asks about is from French label Belleville International. “Mon Pays Est Malade”, by M.Lezard continues to bring down the house every time…wicked anti fascist Paris patois lyrics too if you care to translate. Enjoy. |
