We kick off this show with a live recording from 1966 of Four Women by Nina Simone. Misconstrued as a racist song in this track was banned
|
| by several radio stations. This is just one of the several civil rights anthems that Simone wrote. Nina hung out with James Baldwin during the civil rights era in New York but was opposed to Martin Luther King’s non violence approach. Simone advocated a separatist state for the African descendants of slaves. Her greatest civil rights anthem “Why” The King of Love Is Dead was written and recorded three days after Dr King was assassinated. Later on in the show on the other end of the spectrum is Cherry D’s Love Me or Leave Me. This phat deep house dub is a white label from the Smack Productions label out of New Jersey in 1993. I heard it at a rave in a car park in 1994. I remember the party well because the DJ had to use a gun to persuade the DJ before him to get stop playing. Everyone hated the violent thug house DJ but I secretly loved him cos he played this tune. |
