Arnold Jarvis - Take some time out I start this viewing with Master C & J “face it” a deep dark delve into early new York house from 1987 put out on state street records. The vocals on this one are wicked. Jungle Wonz (Marshall Jefferson) and “The Jungle”is up next, another deep groove put out on Trax records 1986. This was the 4th house track I bought and has had a lot of play time in my sets over the years. I spent many a stoned hour in my youth lying on my bed floating away to this track. The Keynotes is a Kevin Saunderson production, I love the drums and tribal feel to it. Techno at its best. On to Paul Rutherford’s “Get real” which blew me away when I first heard it, I couldn’t believe it was the backing singer from Frankie goes to Hollywood. I’ve had some tripped out moments to this track. If you like this one check out Roisin Murphy’s “overpowered” it’s got a very similar feel to it. Virgo is next with “Do you know who you are?” This is on the Virgo four e.p released in 1989 on Radical records. My friend Steve Sleeve put me onto Virgo and I have to say the whole album is worth a listen. The Dancing Flutes are a Marshall Jefferson production from 1988 on Underground records, you’ll probably be able to tell how much play it’s had by the state of my vinyl (a bit scratchy, sorry guy’s). “Baby wants to ride” by Jamie principle is one of my top all time house tunes, especially the x-rated mix which FFRR put out. I prefer this mix rather than the Frankie Knuckles Trax records release. I saw Jamie perform at Fruit Machine @ Heaven, London, in 1988 on my birthday and was one of the best nights of my life. He was one of the first House artists I’d seen perform live. Up next on the mix is Risque III “More than just a dance”, I love the lyrics on this track, also the b-line, it really works for me. Stride records put this out in 1987, on some sites it’s listed as “do it for me, do it for you”, I’ve got it under “More than just a dance”. The James “jack rabbit” Martin track “Only wanted to be” I don’t have a lot of info about this track, I only have it on the Acido Amigo album. I can tell you that it was released on Westside records in 1988, oh and the original 12″ sells for $500 upwards on the net. Another track I picked up on a comp album is “Dream 17″ by Annette on “North- the sound of the dance underground” which is next in the mix. Released in 1988 on deconstruction records, it represented the Manchester acid sound at the time. It’s kind of hypnotic, I like the vocals. It got a lot of play a clubs like Shoom, Spectrum and Land of Oz. Mia Hesterley is next with “Spark”, this is such a cool piece of techno, produced by techno gods Kevin Saunderson & Blake Baxter. This sound was so new at the time, unlike Chicago the Detroit techno sound was cleaner with some really complex drum patterns. Hi hat madness! For the next track its back to the acid, Armando is probably one of my favourite producer’s from this early period, he carried on making killer acid tracks well into the 90’s. Land of confusion a 1987 release is up there in the acid hall of fame, the reaction this one get’s at NYC Downlow @ Glastonbury is amazing!! Lastly we have Arnold Jarvis and “Take some time out” from 1987 on Fourth Floor records. This is classic house at its best. |
